Kit is the email tool I've recommended more than any other.
I've been a Kit (ConvertKit) customer since 2018. I've used it for newsletters that started at zero and grew past 30k subscribers. I've also bounced to and from competitors — ActiveCampaign, Customer.io, Mailchimp — and I always come back.
Here's the honest read after a long stretch:
What Kit gets right
Visual automation builder. The flow editor is genuinely fun to use. Triggers, conditions, sequences — you can map a 12-step onboarding journey in 15 minutes and actually understand it next month.
Creator economy DNA. Tags, segments, and broadcasts are all built around the way newsletter operators actually think. You're not fighting the tool to do creator-y things like paid subscriptions, free email courses, or content gating.
Deliverability. Inbox placement on Kit is reliably good. I've never had a "is anyone actually getting these?" panic since I switched.
Where it falls short
Transactional + product-event use cases. If you need event-based messaging from your app (like "send this email when a user does X in our product"), Kit isn't the right tool. Reach for Customer.io.
Reporting is basic. Per-link analytics, cohort retention, lifetime value attribution — Kit's reporting is intentionally simple. Power users go elsewhere.
Forms have limits. The form builder is functional but visually conservative. Most serious operators end up using a separate form/popup tool (Beehiiv-style or Sender) and just pushing into Kit's API.
Who should use Kit
- Newsletter operators
- Course creators
- Anyone making the jump from Mailchimp who wants to grow up
- Authors, podcasters, indie media
Who shouldn't
- B2B SaaS doing lifecycle marketing → Customer.io
- Ecommerce → Klaviyo
- Anyone needing a full CRM → ActiveCampaign or HubSpot
Verdict
If you're building an audience and your primary channel is email, Kit is the default and the safe call. Solid product, mature company, fair pricing.
Recommendation: Yes, with the caveat that you'll outgrow it if your business model demands event-based messaging at scale.
